OK, I have seen the aftermarket radio caution on the site for some time, but need further qualification on the matter. Here's the rub: I have checked one car radio that had OVER the 9 volt "kiss of death" threshold with the KEY ON ENGINE OFF and then pulled the radio only to find that the radio was indeed wired correclty . Now this same car with the KEY OFF and out of the igntion, had only had 4 volts across pin 4 and 7. What the aftermarket warning fails to mention is IF? the test is done with the key on or with the key off. So under what condition should the test be done? With key on or with key off?

i spoke to launch yesterday on this because i had a jetta with aftermarket radio .. over 9v with key on less than 4v with key off and out ..the tech help said test is done with key on ......not sure if that helps us except that we possibly didn't destroy our tools .....we need to do the same voltage test on a vw that has a factory radio ..
this particular car i had in shop yesterday will be scanned by a "kid " the customer knows with with another type of tool ... ..i'll let you know what happens to the other tool ..if anything

OK, if and when I get another VW with a factory radio, I also will do a test with key on and key off and out of igntion and see what it reads. Thanks for keeping in touch!

Well heck, I have got one in my shop with an aftermarket radio as we speak. Since the the KEY OFF or KEY ON testing has never been clarified, I took the safe measure of pulling the after-market radio out. Its a pain, but until we all get a final answer on this, better to be safe than sorry.

it is normally on 15+ when you switch on the ignition, here i some times use a DL16 breakout box, i find it is sometime easier to test for comms and canbus, and in this case for 9volts+ on terminal 7 and if you needed to but a resistance in the loom,
Hi all not sure if this is what info you are looking for but here goes, with aftermarket radio you need to disconnect the data -line wire which is usually blue just snip it and cover ends make sure you snip so it could be reconnected to OEM agan if necessary. Hope this helps.
If the wire is attached do not connect until data line wire is undone otherwise snap, crackle, pop
